A deliciously sweet variation on your cup of coffee is an Authentic Vietnamese coffee.

A traditional Vietnamese coffee is intense, strong, sweet and requires only 3 ingredients: coffee, water, and condensed milk. It’s a combination of a bold dark French roast dripped through a Vietnamese filter called a Phin, and mixed with sweetened condensed milk. The Vietnamese Phin creates a stronger brew than the traditional American drip machine and it’s different from a French press. If you don’t have a phin you can brew a strong cup of coffee or use espresso. Any dark roast can be used although an authentic Vietnamese coffee is made with Trung Nguyen or Cafe du Monde.

A fact and some history… Cafe du Monde isn’t pure coffee. The grind is laced with the ground root of the chicory herb. It originated in Europe during WWII when money was tight and expensive foods like coffee needed to last. Chicory root was used to stretch the coffee supply. After the war chicory flavor became a trend.

Pour the coffee over a couple of tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk and blend. Adjust the level of sweetness to your preference. It can be served hot or iced.

If you want to kick it up another notch try a Vietnamese egg coffee! It’s luxurious and creamy. Place an egg and the condensed milk in a jar. Whisk the mixture 5-6 minutes until its frothy and smooth.
